DOS is from Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its bi-polar halves, Deux and Deuce, are conflicted about the "true" orientation of the world. Black and white is too reductive. Maybe they could meet in the middle?
An idea begins to solidify.
Collage is clothing and context. What DOS wears accentuates its unique halves while foregrounding a middle. Where DOS inhabits is up and down - unique in identity and linked - where hierarchy is relative, opposites simultaneous.
An urban Villa Rotunda turned DOS' home (threshold), a house of knowledge and culture blowing open a hole in a world of convention and abstraction - firmly embedded. Character and narrative collapse in programmatic composition.
We find value in the book as an educational tool, but as decoration? A contemplative notion. A reduction to sign.
The book sits on a pedestal in the museum as an artifact, a relic... only to be discarded on the scrap heap of history. From tool to art to trash (or trash as art) marks the journey from bottom to top.
A test of heirarchy. What a relief. When a perception is foreshortened what do we prioritize?
The challenge, the balancing of powers, is in resolving space and activity.
How can an architecture unfold through the elaboration of character, narrative and context? How can the successive layers of meaning extracted from form and figuration inform new ways of thinking about architecture?
